TTIP and the EU Member States Report Launched in Brussels

Published: February 1, 2016

Last week, AmCham EU launched an important new report , entitled “TTIP and the EU Member States,” outlining the benefits of TTIP across the European Union. The full report is available here.

The report, based on research by the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, emphasizes the clear benefits for all of Europe in terms of GDP and wage growth, and lowered prices and increased choices for consumers arising from an ambitious and comprehensive agreement with the United States.

The study also tackles many of the myths about the agreement which are prevalent in the European debate on TTIP. Aimed at European legislators and the public, this analysis could help shift the debate by focusing on the benefits of the agreement for each country.

Importantly, the report features detailed analysis of the impact of TTIP on each member state, and also emphasizes the close existing economic ties between the U.S. and each member-state which stand to be considerably strengthened in the years ahead.

The report’s conclusions include:

  • TTIP has the potential to deepen and strengthen the EU’s internal single market.
  • TTIP should include a firm commitment to deepen transatlantic regulatory cooperation now and into the future, as regulatory cooperation provides the most significant long-term economic benefits.
  • TTIP will hugely aid SMEs both through direct exports and larger markets for the companies they supply.

Unfortunately, the study also appears to tacitly back the European Commission’s call for reform of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement system, a stance we at the U.S. Chamber do not support.

If you have any questions about the report, please don’t hesitate to ask. We would be happy to connect you directly with AmCham EU. Please also share this important report with those who you think may find it interesting or useful as we make the case for a strong TTIP agreement.
