On November 15, AmCham’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee hosted an event on the drivers of equal opportunity at the offices of Stibbe in Amsterdam during which speakers from education, the legal industry and business shared the stage to discuss how education, legislation and business can and should contribute to more equality.
The event was opened by Jeroen Kortmann, Partner at Stibbe, follwed by Bowen Paulle, Assistant Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Amsterdam who discussed the key outcomes of his research and evidence-based statistics on inequality in education and his perspective on potential solutions to illustrate how education can support equal opportunities. Afterwards, Astrid Helstone, Partner Employment Law at Stibbe focussed on the legal enforcement of equal opportunity in Dutch Labor Practice and Nikki Brouwer-Machielsen, HR Lead Benelux at Salesforce talked about what this means in a business context. Furthermore, a panel discussion with all speakers, moderated by Nilgun Langenberg, Chair of AmCham’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee and a additional contribution by Heleen Terwijn, Founder and Managing Director of IMC Weekendschool took place. At the end of the event, there was time for drinks and networking.
