The Founder’s Mentality: How to Overcome the Predictable Crises of Growth, a new book by former AmCham president and ex oficio board member Chris Zook, co-authored with Zook’s Bain & Company colleague James Allen, was published on June 7, 2016 by Harvard Business Press.
Only about one company in nine has sustained more than a minimum level of profitable growth during the past decade. When asked why, 85% of executives blame internal factors for their shortfall, not external ones beyond their control.
In The Founder’s Mentality, Zook and Allen demonstrate that companies can avoid predictable and avoidable growth chokepoints if they are motivated by the attitudes and behaviors—the “founder’s mentality”—often embodied by a company’s original founder. New research from Bain shows that returns to shareholders of public companies with a founder still involved are three times higher than in other companies. And, whether founder-led or not, companies that are in the top 20% of financial performance consistently rank four to five times higher on attributes of the founder’s mentality than the worst performers.
Already the #1 best seller in Amazon’s Strategy and Competition category, The Founder’s Mentality has received significant media coverage and strong reviews in the Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today and Inc. The book also has been praised by founders and CEOs including Les Wexner of L Brands, Michael Dell of Dell and Carlos Brito of Anheuser-Busch InBev.
