Google is going to expand its data center in the Eemshaven in Groningen, a Google spokesperson confirmed on Thursday, March 15. The company is investing an additional 500 million euros in the complex.
The additional investment follows an original investment of 950 million euros. The expansion is a response to the increased demand for Google’s services. "Every day the demand for Google services is increasing and our infrastructure of data centers follows that same rhythm." Google does not yet know how big the new wing will be and when the construction can begin.
Google opened its data center in Eemshaven in December 2016 and currently employs 250 people at the site. The data center is a storage for data from multiple Google websites and services, such as the search engine, Gmail mail service and video site YouTube.
At the datacenter only sustainable electricity is used, including wind power from Eneco’s large wind farm in Delfzijl.
