The Role of Legal in Furthering ESG

Published:

On October 10th, AmCham and its Legal Committee hosted an event on ‘The Role of Legal in Furthering ESG’.

As a scene setter, Stuart Neely, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, and Rozemarijn Bloemendal, Partner at Deloitte, compared ESG obligations in the U.S. and the EU/NL contexts. A distinguished panel then presented best practices (but also related challenges) from daily practice in their companies: Milana Jevic Gledovic, LL.M., SVP Legal and Public Affairs at Ahold Delhaize, Monique van Diessen, Senior Director | Assistant General Counsel | Operations, Converse & Compliance EMEA at Nike and Dries Duijnstee, Chief Legal Officer at Versuni (formerly Philips Domestic Appliances). Susan du Becker of Microsoft (Chair of AmCham's Legal Committee) moderated the discussion.

What is the challenge we have looking forward? What is the role of Legal in furthering ESG? How can Legal influence the business and help the company improve ESG performance? How can your company effectively deal with the differences between the U.S. and Europe / the Netherlands when it comes to ESG? What are the opportunities for collaboration and how can we create value together? All those questions were discussed during the event. Can legal obligations be an enabler instead of an obstacle? Our speakers confirmed: yes, they can!

We cordially thank all speakers for their contribution and Saskia Blokland of Norton Rose Fulbright for hosting!
