Webinar: Partner and Competitor: How Should Europe Deal with (the Rise of) China?

On June 22, AmCham’s Young Professionals were invited to join the webinar ‘Partner and Competitor: How Should Europe Deal with (the Rise of) China?’ This event was organized in collaboration with Krijger & Partners and supported by the U.S. Embassy, The Hague.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, mistrust and rivalry have been simmering between the U.S. and China for many years. Also Europe has been evaluating its position regarding China. The relationship with China offers tremendous opportunities for Western businesses, for instance in the areas of sustainable energy and new technologies. But it is also imbalanced. The coronavirus pandemic has only strained the relationship between the U.S. and China further. And for Europe, 2020 might be a defining year in the relationship with China.

We were very honored that Frank Heemskerk, Secretary General of the European Round Table for Industry (ERT), delivered the keynote speech during this event. Mr. Heemskerk elaborated on how western businesses should deal with the challenges and opportunities and how to find a balance in the relationship with China, when the country is both an important trading partner and a direct competitor.

The webinar concluded with an engaging Q&A with our participants, after some additional reflections by Alex Krijger.

AmCham The Netherlands cordially thanks Frank Heemskerk and Alex Krijger for sharing their valuable observations and insights and for hosting this webinar.
