UPS has served customers in the Netherlands for nearly three and a half decades. It continues to grow, thanks in part the country’s strategic location, diverse economy, innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, robust infrastructure and highly skilled talent pool.
Today, UPS operates 22 facilities and employs more than 2,200 people in the Netherlands across its small package, freight forwarding, and logistics and distribution business units.
“The Netherlands stands out as an export powerhouse in Europe. With its vibrant landscape of small and medium sized enterprise (SMEs) fueling innovation and economic growth, we’re proud to empower these businesses to expand their reach and thrive in a global market.” said Karl Haberkorn, UPS West District President.
Given its central location in the heart of Europe and connectivity to major airports, roadways and seaports, the Netherlands serves as a major gateway for Dutch businesses looking to access the broader European market – driving innovation, fostering entrepreneurship and stimulating economic growth. The Netherlands has established itself as a thriving global business hub, with over 1.5 million SMEs, according to Statistics Netherlands. UPS is uniquely positioned to assist local SMEs in their efforts to tap into new markets and seize trade opportunities.
In 2020, UPS opened the Eindhoven hub, representing a €130 million investment. Designed to enhance its efficiency and ensure an even faster and more reliable flow of goods between countries in Western Europe, it can sort up to 29,000 parcels per hour. In 2022, UPS Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) opened a brand-new supply chain solutions facility in Roermond, expanding the existing campus by 17,000m² to a total of 85,000m². The new building is home to UPS’s first Innovation Center in Europe, establishing Roermond as a technology hub which will benefit from its strategic location, closely linked to the air and seaports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Liège, and Cologne.
UPS has seen significant growth in its healthcare and cold chain capabilities in the country to keep pace with the growing cold chain market which has been rising steadily over the past five years and is projected to grow by another 25% over the next few years, reaching $21.3 billion in 2024.
“As the demand for healthcare logistics solutions continues to surge in the Netherlands, we’ve invested in our facilities and product offerings to meet this accelerating demand. We work with a range of healthcare customers in the Netherlands, ensuring the safe and temperature-secure delivery of their vital medical products through specialized cold chain solutions” added Karl.
The newly upgraded and expanded European Healthcare hub operating in Roermond has direct access to major ports, allowing for short transit times across the world and next-day delivery to 80% of Europe. Additionally, it is a little over an hour to the European air hub at Cologne Bonn Airport, UPS’s largest operation outside of the US.
With 80% of pharma products in Europe now requiring temperature-controlled transportation, UPS Healthcare also expanded its specialized temperature-controlled fleet across Benelux. The vehicles transport healthcare products in temperature-controlled environments and offer next-day, GDP-compliant delivery for hospitals, pharmacies, clinics, laboratories and doctors - all of whom are increasingly reliant on time-critical and temperature-sensitive treatments for their patients.
The new UPS Healthcare facility has installed 2,500 solar panels that provide more than 1.2 GWh of energy, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 450 households in the Netherlands. The solar panels enable UPS to feed power back into the grid, contributing to its local sustainability efforts. This initiative aligns with UPS’s goal of powering one in four facilities with renewable energy by 2025. By 2035, UPS aims to have all its facilities powered by renewable energy. This transition to renewable energy at UPS Healthcare facilities will result in lower emissions, for the customer chain as well.
